It breaks my heart looking at that picture. Seeing all those children there and wondering why them? Why anyone? Being a mother I look at this picture and think, what if that was my child. What if I was in that mother's shoes. How would I feel knowing that my child is suffering, and I can't afford to do anything about it. It breaks my heart thinking about it. I am greatful and blessed, that I am able to get treatment for my child, when I need to. This breaks my heart, but also makes me happy at the same time. These people are suffering but they are getting a chance to get some kind of treatment, and hopefully some relief. Thank you to all volunteers out there that give these people that chance.

What an amazing experience for Geoff. It's sad to think how many people are suffering and are not able to afford treatment. We should all be thankful for everything we have. Thank you to people like Geoff and friends for volunteering and helping these people.

The above blog, and two previous guest blogs are written by Geoffrey Hays, Creighton University Medical School. A group of students are spreading good health and good will in the Philippines, Malaysia and Cambodia accompanied by two physicians. Their trek will last 5 weeks and will be an experience that will shape their medical careers for the good. Kudos!

Education is important. There are organizations which are concerned with skin cancer. Check out the Skin Cancer Foundation

The sad thing is that there are alot of people out there who don't realize how serious skin cancer is. I think the problem is that people aren't being educated enough about skin cancer. Even on television the cancers that are talked about alot are ones like Leukemia or breast cancer. Both are very serious, and well known by people, unlike skin cancer. Is there an organization for skin cancer?

Sherry, Thank you for sharing. The more we point out the reality of melanoma the more likely people will take appropriate protective measures.

My brother was 35 when diagnosed with melanoma. It was a spot on his cheek. He was never a sun worshipper; in fact, he worked nights and slept days. The only thing we can think of was that he always got sunburned each summer as a child (that stopped before he was a teenager), and never used sunscreen. He had surgery, and is at stage IIIc, the prognosis being very up in the air. He has had radiation, interferon, interleukin II, anything you can think of. So far it has not spread. Remember, just staying in the shade isn't enough. A cloudy day does NOT mean skip sunscreen (you can still see during the day, can't you? Well, then UV radiation still can get to the skin). "Slip, slap, slop!" (Slip on the sunglasses, slap on a hat, slop on some sunscreen).
